Last Wed Spouse & I spent the day in NYC. My realtor association charters a bus every year on the 1st Wed in Dec so Realtors and others can spend the day in the city. Many of us go to see a matinee, while others prefer shopping, looking at the department store windows dressed for Christmas, and site-seeing. We try to do a bit of it all. Our friend Joey and his husband Glenn went with us again this year too. The weather was in the upper 30s so it was cold but it wasn't windy so it was pleasant to be outside.
We started with a Christmasy photo in front of the giant balls.
Next we stopped in at Capital Grille and just beat the lunch rush. Spouse had a rib-eye steak sandwich with caramelized onions and Havarti. I had a lobster roll, and we both had yummy truffle fries. Wow!
Next we headed toward the theatre, stopping in at a few stores along the way. I admit it - I love to look inside those "I Love New York" stores at all the souvenirs and touristy crap! I don't know why but I do. Then we arrived at the Helen Hayes theatre.
And right next door was the famous Sardi's.
We all enjoyed Torch Song! Its interesting because the play Torch Song was written in the early 80s, then made into a film in 1988 called Torch Song Trilogy. Now the original play is back on Broadway. I saw the film first so it was interesting to see how they condensed all of the locations in the film back into just a few locations in the play, like the original.
The Helen Hayes theatre is a smaller, intimate venue which we enjoyed a lot. I'd purchased tickets online ahead of time so we were just a few rows from the stage.
After the show we walked over to Rockefeller Center to see the official tree.
While there Spouse & I posed for a photo with the tree in the background. I posted it on Facebook and got many compliments on the photo, which I agree is one of the best of us. I typically don't like photos of myself because my smiles don't look natural or my eyes are squinty. But this photo turned out really well I think.
It was a very nice day in the Big Apple.
'Tales of the Sissy' is a play on words related to Armistead Maupin's novel 'Tales of the City' which chronicles the daily lives of several seemingly unrelated people. Since my blog chronicles my daily life and I am gay (hence the stereotype 'sissy'), I decided to call my blog 'Tales of the Sissy'.

Shopping
Yesterday I joined several of my fellow realtors and some mortgage company employees to shop for needy children in our area.
Our county is rather diverse in that there are large multi-million dollar beachfront homes only occupied a few weeks each summer, as well as tiny old trailer homes occupied year round by entire families. There's both wealth and poverty here.
That's why our realtor association has a foundation that raises money in the fall so that these needy children can have clothing and toys for Christmas. Yesterday's shopping trip was how those items are obtained.
We were given an information sheet with the childrens' names, ages, sizes, and preferred colors. Additionally the sheet indicates whether or not the child needs a winter coat. I shopped for 6 children yesterday and all of them needed coats and shoes.
Bargain shopping has been my hobby for years, having furnished apartments and homes on a budget many times, as well as finding mid-century modern furniture and decor as low as possible. So stretching the budget for these children is right in my wheelhouse, and I really enjoy getting the closest match to what they want/need and spending the least possible.
While the childrens' stories are sad (some living with elderly grandparents because their parents are in prison) the shopping project is actually happy and fun because we're accomplishing our goal of helping these needy kids who aren't responsible for their situations.

Pajamas
Yesterday I was shopping for a cause!
I met many of my fellow Realtors and mortgage folks at WalMart at 7:30 AM, with a thermos of coffee of course. As in passed years we were there to shop for clothes, shoes, coats, and toys for needy families in our community. This shopping venture was funded by a huge fundraising event last month.
I paired up with my friend Joey and we shopped for a family with 6 kids: two age 16, two age 10, one age 3, and one age 1. (I can only assume there are 2 sets of twins.) The brief family profile indicated that the grandmother was granted custody of the children to prevent them from being split up in the foster care system. "They arrived with just the clothes on their backs" the profile read. I felt a deep pain in my soul and stopped reading. God only knows what these kids have been through. I needn't know the details, I just needed to shop as smartly as possible to get them as much as I could.
We were given the kids' clothing sizes, shoe sizes, and favorite colors to help inform our selections. We're also given a budget for each kid. In past years some of the kids asked for specific toys ie: Legos, Barbie doll, etc which is fine. All 6 of these children asked for pajamas.
Pajamas!
3 of them asked for coats.
Sigh.
The older kids listed some hobbies (ie: drawing, building things, etc) which we used to pick out things for them. We did our best to get them pajamas and as many coats, shoes, clothes and toys as possible by stretching the dollars allotted. It was fun too!
This activity is a vivid reminder of just how 'good' we have it, and gives me extra incentive to find ways to give back to my community. Food drives, Toys for Tots, and gift cards are both easy and impactful.
Later this month I'll be sending an end-of-year mailing to more than 150 clients with whom I've worked over the years. I've decided to include in the mailing an encouragement to give back to the local community in whatever way they feel comfortable. A little effort and cost to us can make a huge difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

Fun weekend
We had a great weekend!
Although I did not request to be off work Sat & Sun, it just worked out that way on the scheduled. Sat morning Spouse & I met Steven for a late breakfast, then we returned home where I broke down some cardboard boxes and stuffed them into the recycling bin, which made room for me to assemble a set of garage shelves onto which I put some stuff to get it better organized. Then I spent a little time weeding the front flower beds before taking a shower.
Then Spouse & I went to the 5 year anniversary celebration of the Jusst Sooup Ministries facility. We became acquainted with the Dunnings who founded and run the soup kitchen when they were our neighbors 10 years ago. But 5 years ago they were surprised with a fabulous state-of-the-art soup kitchen facility and residence and were featured on ABC's "Extreme Make-over: Home Addition" in 2011. The celebration was a big barbeque and a chance to visit with founders Dale & Ken whom we like so much.
Later that evening we went out to dinner with Steven & Thad, and then I did my last Boy George performance of the summer in the Legends show. Several colleagues from work showed up which was a big surprise. After the show I mingled with the audience, posed for pictures, and accepted some tips! People really, really enjoyed the Boy George/Culture Club songs and I received 2 $10 tips!! Once my work friends left I continued chatting with some folks I met after the show. A straight couple named John & Lucy were nice, but rather inebriated so I didn't mind at all when they said they had to go while they could still walk. I also met a couple from Philly named Charles & John. Actually, they're not from Philly; they moved there less than a year ago. But Charles has been in real estate so we had that in common and both guys were a lot of fun to hang out with. I gave them my business card and hoped they'd reach out to me, since I'd told them I was going to Philly the next day. I didn't get home until 2am.
Then Spouse & I were up at 7:30 Sun morning so we could meet Steven & Thad at 8:30 to spend the day in Philly. We started with a trip to Trader Joe's to stock up. We typically go to Trader Joe's when we visit our family, but the last couple times were visited we didn't have time, so we were out of everything. Next we went to the mid-century warehouse to oogle all the lovely pieces. They're only open to the public twice a month, on Sundays, for 4 hours. Spouse & I found this lovely dining table that would be perfect for our dining room since its 2 butterfly leaves make it expand to nearly double its original size.
This table can seat 10-12, while our current dining table only seats 6. We didn't buy the table but Spouse said if it was there in 2 weeks he'd make an offer. I predict he'll find a way to talk himself out of that, as much as we both liked it.
Next we went to lunch at Matt & Marie's, an Italian-style sandwich shop, and then onto Century 21 department store. I got some new underwear (to replace some old pairs) and a new wallet. Spouse got a shirt. We got home about 6pm.

Fun, food and friends
So, the weekend before last our good friends Ron & James and Mike & Clark came for their annual visit. They arrived midday on Fri and took advantage of our tax-free factory outlet store shopping, then met up with some mutual friends of ours for a visit before arriving at our house around 6pm.
Although our friends come just once per year, I was surprised they noticed we'd replaced the area rug in our living room. The previous area rug was off white and although it was wool and supposedly easy to clean, it unfortunately did not fair well with our pets. It seems they've all puked, peed or pooped on that darn rug for 1 reason or another at some point in time. So we recently replaced it with an area rug that will be more 'forgiving' and also feels more modern that the previous one.
After a little chit-chat we headed out to dinner at Beachside Bar & Grill. Though the weather was mild enough we could have eaten outside on their huge patio, we opted to eat indoors. The food was very good and our server was cute and attentive. Afterward we walked down the street to the boardwalk and treated ourselves to ice cream. Back at home we visited until everyone's eyelids became heavy.
Sat morning we had coffee, juice, croissants, and scones and just enjoyed a lazy morning of conversations and laughs. Later we got dressed and walked downtown where we stopped into a few shops and the antique emporium. Then we met up with our mutual friends Marty & Karen for lunch at the new Crooked Hammock Brewery.
Afterward a few of us went home and a few of us made a stop at the Dollar Tree. Ron loves to stock up nice, well-priced greeting cards there. That afternoon some of us napped while others talked until it was time to have dinner. We went to Pig + Fish, and everyone started off with cocktails before deciding on our apps and entrees. As the 1st of the entrees was arriving at the table, James said "Here comes your chicken, Ron" and several of us burst into laughter because the runner delivering the chicken dinner looked like he was 14 years old. (Gay men of a certain age will make the connection between chicken and 14 year olds.) Everyone enjoyed their meals and there were many more laughs that night.
After dinner we walked over to the Blue Moon to check out all the creative costumes, since it was Halloween. Also there were Steven & Thad and Rick & Nick. We hung out for a while until it got too crowded.
Sun morning after conversations and coffee we walked over to Honey's Farm Fresh for breakfast which was delicious and filling. Afterwards the guys packed up their gear and bid us goodbye before heading back to DC. It was a fun weekend, complete with lots of laughs and friendship.

(no) Indian Summer
I'm a summer person. This is likely no surprise to readers, since my blog shows that I live at the beach, love going to the beach, drive a convertible, love wearing shorts and flipflops, and love sitting on my screened porch. I should live in southern CA where the weather is like summer all year round.
One of the great things about living in the mid-Atlantic region is Indian Summer. Its not unusual for us to have sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s well into Oct, of which I take full advantage. I actually have a memory of sitting out on the beach the 1st Sun in Nov some years back, but I can't find it in my blog. I continue wearing shorts and flipflops and driving with the top down as long as I possibly can, squeezing out the final minutes of Indian Summer every year.
But this year I feel like we're being cheated with no Indian Summer. The month of Sept was cooler than usual and we've had rain and/or overcast skies much more than usual. Now here we are in the 1st week of Oct and we've had cool temps, wind, and rain from Hurricane Joaquin for the last week. Today it was in the 50s when I got dressed for work, although its supposed to go up to 66 today. I had to wear long pants and socks and closed shoes to work - its depressing!
I'm definitely NOT 1 of those people who gets excited about fall. To me, fall simply means the end of summer, a reality I try to avoid as long as possible. I don't even like shopping for fall clothes, since I find the colors almost as depressing as the passage of summer.
The 10-day forecast does show daytime temps creeping up into the low 70s during the day, but its just not the same as a good old fashioned Indian Summer.

Bargain decorating
Yesterday while I was out running errands I stopped in at HomeGoods, which is inarguably my favorite store. I found a large square mirror with a beveled edge in a wide white lacquered frame for $24.99. I could easily see this for 2 or 3 times as much in a retail store. The lacquer finish gave it a glamorous look I thought would fit in well with the Hollywood Regency theme in our guest bedroom, so I bought it.
I also saw a charcoal drawing of the Eiffel Tower in a mercury glass/distressed mirror frame for $12.99. Again, I could see this for 2 or 3 times as much in a retail store. I thought the mercury glass/distressed mirror finish would fit in well in the same room, so I bought it too.
Oh, and did I mention that I had $40 worth of HomeGoods bonus dollars, so both items were FREE?
I had also saved a piece of metal wall art that used to be in our master bedroom. I'd gotten it on clearance several years ago and eventually replaced it with a nicer piece of artwork. Yesterday I gave it 2 coats of black spray paint to go with the Hollywood Regency scheme, and then hung all 3 pieces. Here's the result:
For under $40 I have an interesting wall collage. I really like the way the shapes compliment each other, and I love that I was able to re-purpose the metal piece with just a $1 can of spray paint. Decorating doesn't have to cost a lot if you use some creativity and know where to shop.

Weekend recap
This past weekend I was scheduled off work, didn't have any particular plans, and didn't get any client or work calls. It was nice to have the 2 days in a row off work with Spouse. We didn't go to the beach because it was cool and overcast on Sat and cool and sunny on Sun; too cool to sit on the beach. But we did a few little things around the house, did a little shopping, took the dogs for a couple walks, sat on the screened porch, and had a relaxed weekend.
Sat I performed as Neil Sedaka in the LEGENDS show at the Blue Moon. Its a fun medley of songs (Breakin' Up Is Hard To Do, Laughter In The Rain, Happy Birthday Sweet 16, Calendar Girl) and the audience enjoyed the show.
After the show's finale song, the LEGENDS come out into the audience to meet and greet with the audience. I had my photo taken with a couple of strangers, as well as with a couple of friends.
After changing out of my finale costume I met up with my old friend Chris.
We met about 10 years ago and discovered we went to the same high school and had many common friends, although neither of us recalled meeting each other while in school. He usually touches base with me on the weekends he spends here at the beach. We hung out together for a while after the show and laughed at the drunk girls from a large bachelorette party. The next morning Chris joined me & Spouse and Steven and Joe P for breakfast at the Crystal.

It ain't fittin'
Believe it or not, my intentional weight loss does have a negative side effect: my clothes don't fit anymore. Poor me! I know.
But seriously, having lost more than 30 lbs means that none of my jeans fit anymore. I finally broke down a few weeks ago and bought a new pair of jeans so I could stop wearing the big ones with 2-3 inches of the waist cinched up with a belt.
All the pants I wear to work are also too big. I typically wear khaki-style pants, and have them in light and dark khaki, navy, olive and grey. Fortunately I saved the ones that were a size smaller in the guest room closet. I was elated to try them on and find that they fit me just fine. I would have hated to go out and spend money to replace the pants with a smaller size.
But when I got my shorts out I wasn't so lucky. I tried on all 17 pairs of shorts I wore last summer and only 7 of them are okay. Even those 7 are a little too big and will have to be cinched with a belt, but they weren't as large on me as the other 10 pairs. My test was this: if I buttoned them and could slide them over my hips, they were out. Sadly, 3 of the 10 pairs were brand new last summer, and all of my plaid shorts are too big to wear. Now I have no more plaid shorts.
So last night Spouse & I stopped in at the Old Navy Outlet Store and I was able to replace 2 colors I'd bought brand new last summer with my current size, plus found a pair of navy shorts with pale pink flamingos embroidered on them to replace 1 of the plaid. Oddly I found no plaid shorts.
My friend Thad will disapprove. He believes that Old Navy is for "young people" and says that I am NOT young. Sometimes he sees me and jokingly says I'm wearing "age-inappropiate apparel". But Old Navy clothes appeal to me, and they're very reasonably priced (especially with all the crazy sales our Outlet Store is always running), and I don't like the stuffy-looking clothes intended for men my age. So I often buy things at Old Navy and its companion stores The Gap and Banana Republic, all of which have Outlet Stores here.

Red letter day
So yesterday was a pretty terrific day.
I went shopping for some new jeans. I can't remember how long its been since I bought new jeans, and with my recent weight loss (21 lbs so far thanks to Fit for Life) all my old jeans are just too big. Add to that the fact that several pairs were ill-fitting to begin with. It was definitely time for a new pair of jeans that fit.
I stopped in at the Old Navy outlet store and went to the jeans wall. I was confronted with 5 different fits: slim, straight, boot cut, regular, and loose.
I don't wear boots and I don't want loose fitting jeans, so just for the hell of it I grabbed a pair of jeans in slim, straight, and regular cuts in my regular/most recent size and headed to the dressing room.
To my surprise, all 3 were too big - even the slim cut! So I tried all 3 cuts in the next size down and to my utter shock - the slim cut fit the best!!
This was so shocking to me because I don't think anyone's referred to me using the word "slim" EVER! Even as a kid I was chubby. My mom used to special order my pants and jeans from Sears in order to get the 'chubby kid' ones. I doubt anyone would look at me today and think "slim" either, but the proof is sewn right into the waistband.
Mind you, these are 'slim' cut jeans - NOT skinny jeans. I am a 51 year old man with enough sense to know that 51 year old men should not be wearing skinny jeans.
I washed my new 'slim' jeans yesterday afternoon and decided to wear them to work today. As I was getting dressed this morning and feeling good about my 'slim' fit jeans, I decided to try on a belt I bought last summer on sale that just barely closed then. I put it on today and it fit terrifically!
Its the little things in life, people.

Keeping it local
Spouse & I decided we wanted an electric space heater.
This was last Fri, Feb 13, still very much wintertime, even here at the beach. So we went to Lowe's, where we'd seen heaters before, but they had none on this visit. Next we went to Home Depot, but they had none either. Finally we went to Walmart only to find they had none as well.
As I mentioned, its mid-February and still very much wintertime, yet no space heaters were available for purchase.
But do you know what they had in the store where the space heaters had been??
Grass seed. Fertilizer. Patio furniture.
Remember that its winter and the temperatures have been below freezing at least at night. There is no point in spreading grass seed on frozen ground, and it will be at least 2-3 months before anyone around here will be able to use outdoor furniture.
The same thing happens in other stores. A few years ago I tried to find a pair of navy shorts in early July. Nearly all the clothing stores had their winter coats and sweaters out. Not a single pair of navy shorts in any size to be found.
Last Sept I went to the Dollar Tree and they had Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas merchandise in the store all at the same time. In Sept. This rushing of the seasons is equally annoying to me. Who wants to buy Christmas cookie tins and have them sit around for 3 months?
This begs the questions: Why do stores insist on selling out and not replenishing seasonal items when they are still in season? Why do stores insist on filling up the shelves and isles with merchandise people can't use for 2-3 months? Whose interests does this serve? Certainly not the public's.
So Fri night Spouse & I returned home and I ordered an electric space heater from Amazon.com. There were multiple brands and models to choose from, and with our Prime membership the shipping was free and they promised delivery by Sun. It arrived on Sun as promised.
I normally try to shop locally because it invests in retailers who provide local jobs for people in my local community. But I couldn't help but think about the fact that my local retailers don't seem nearly as concerned with providing me with seasonal merchandise as I am to support their stores and employees.
Maybe this is the new reality. Maybe brick-n-mortar stores will just provide next season's merchandise for those who really want to plan ahead, and those of us who want in-season merchandise will just obtain it from afar. I hadn't been thinking that way, but I am now.

Score!
On Sat Spouse & I did a little shopping. I needed a baby gift for some clients/friends who recently had their 1st child. Found a great gift for a great price at HomeGoods.
I also needed some shoes. I was looking for something not as dressy as a hard sole dress shoe, but not as casual as a Sketcher shoe. A middle-of-the-road shoe is just what I need for the Dockers-style pants I wear to work most days.
1 of the stores we looked in was the Bass outlet/factory store. I'm a rather picky shopper and never buy anything that isn't at least on sale, if not on clearance, so I was delighted to find not 1 but 2 pairs of shoes I liked in my size on clearance.
On the left is an updated wingtip in black with a grey plaid inset. On the right is a tan saddle shoe with dark brown suede. I normally wear size 10 but these were a little snug so wound up getting size 10 1/2. They fit great and are very comfortable.
The shelf label claims the "regular price" was $160. for each pair, but were on "clearance" for $29.99. That's more than 80% off. While I'm skeptical that these shoes ever actually sold for $160. I felt that $29.99 was a very, very good price for these shoes. Score!
So I bought both pairs. I figure I'll wear the black ones with my navy and grey pants and with jeans, and I'll wear the tan ones with my various shades of khaki pants.

Holiday fun
This morning I was showered, dressed, and in the Kmart at 7am. That sounds like the opposite of 'Holiday fun', right? Especially since I am not a morning person. But the reason for this oddity is because I was shopping for a needy family for Christmas. Kmart opens the store to us an hour earlier than usual (hence 7am) and generously takes 10% off the totals. I arrived on time, armed with a thermos of coffee to help me wake up.
About a month ago my local realtor association had a big Mardi Gras-themed fundraiser to raise money for this specific shopping event. As in years past, I paired up with my friend Joey and we accepted the need/wish list for a family with 7 kids, ages 1, 2, 4, two aged 5, 6, and 7. The family's profile indicated the family was homeless; all 7 kids staying with their grandfather (whose probably younger than me considering the children's ages), and there was no mention of the parents. While their situation is sad, we did feel joy in shopping for them and getting as much as possible from their list.
The 5, 6, and 7 year olds needed coats, so we got those. All 7 kids needed shoes or boots so we got those too. Each child got a complete outfit (pants and shirt or sweater), and all the kids got toys except the 1 year old. Since the kids likely don't have their own beds, we also picked out fleece throws with matching stuffed animals for them to curl up with at night like this one, possibly on a sofa or recliner. (The arms and legs open to release the fleece throw.) Next week I will participate in wrapping these and other gifts for the needy families.
After shopping I headed to work, but left early in order to get ready for dinner and the Rehoboth Beach Christmas parade. Spouse & I met Steven & Thad and Joe P and his 2 friends from PA for dinner first, then I slipped away to adorn Big Ella with lighted wreaths and bows.
It rained all day long and we anxiously awaited the official word from the parade sponsor to see if they were going to cancel the parade. Fortunately they decided to keep the parade on schedule since the radar showed the rain moving away from the area. However, it didn't really stop raining until minutes before the parade, which caused some participants to cancel and resulted in a much lower than usual attendance. But we had a great dinner together and still had fun at the parade. At least it wasn't bitter cold like last year.

Perspective
So the other day I got a little annoyed because I was trying to get into a parking lot and the drivers in front of me were unable to get in due to the car exiting the lot that was in the middle of the roadway, rather than on 1 side. The cars were backed up trying to get in until the clueless driver exited. I was in a bit of a hurry.
I finally got into the parking lot and of course there were no empty spaces close to the store so I parked at the far end of the lot and grabbed a cart as I entered the store. I'm looking for a specific gift, but unable to find it, I begin thinking of a back-up gift.
These days they really seem to pack the stores. The isles are more narrow than ever, and passing someone with a shopping cart is next to impossible. I see these 2 'mature' women with carts who are stopped and talking, totally blocking the isle. They're old, they don't work, they're not on a timeline like I am, yet there they are, blocking the isle with their empty carts while they chat. I can feel my patience running thin and my blood pressure spiking. One of them finally notices me and moves her cart so I can pass.
I round the corner and head down another isle and see a woman heading toward me with another woman clutching the 1st woman's arm. Then I notice the 2nd woman is wearing dark glasses. She's blind. I pull my cart over as far as possible so the 2 women can pass by me, and I count my blessings.
I think about my recent silent complaints about the traffic congestion, the far away parking place, and the shoppers blocking the isle. Suddenly these things seemed insignificant compared to being blind. At least I have my sight. I can drive. I can shop alone. I can do all kinds of things that blind woman couldn't do. I just needed to see her to put my 'problems' into perspective.

Underwear shopping
As long as I can remember I have only worn white briefs. I have dabbled once or twice into the colorful bikinis, boxers, and boxer-briefs, have always come back to plain white briefs (PWB). While I know they aren't stylish like Andrew Christian, NastyPig, or the like, I enjoy the simplicity and stark white cleanliness of PWB. I'm not dating or hooking up so I don't need to impress anyone with my stylish underwear. Besides, are 50-year olds even allowed to wear Andrew Christian or Nasty Pig??
Recently I determined I was in need of some new underwear, and since I had a $20 rewards certificate for Marshalls/TJ Maxx/HomeGoods, I decided I would get my new underwear at Marshalls. While I found a multitude of white undershirts, v-necks, and tanks, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me that there were no PWB. Oh sure, there were the individual Calvin Klein white briefs, 1 per box for $12 each. But I was looking for a 4-pack or 5-pack for no more than $20.
It just wasn't going to happen, at least not that day, and not in that Marshalls. So I contemplated coming back another day in hopes the inventory would be different, or breaking out of my PWB routine. I decided there was no real 'reason' I needed to stick with PWB since they were getting so hard to find, and ended up with a 5-pack of Reebok cotton briefs for $9.99. Make that two 5-packs, since I had $20 to spend.
So now I have 10 new pairs of comfortable, cotton briefs in an array of colors. Not that anyone sees them but me and occasionally Spouse.

Bargain hunting
I am definitely NOT a clothes snob. I don't need designer labels or embroidered logos. $78 for a long sleeve shirt is too much for me. I usually buy and wear clothes from Old Navy and The Gap outlet stores.
But once in a while I treat myself to some really well-made clothing when I can get a good deal on it. Yesterday I visited the Polo Ralph Lauren outlet store with a Friends & Family 30% off coupon and looked at the sale items and clearance racks to maximize the value. (The 30% off coupon is good on ALL merchandise, regardless of whether or not its on sale or clearance.)
I ended up with 2 long sleeve shirts (I'll put away until fall) and 3 short sleeve shirts and a belt (not pictured).
The OUTLET price (not the retail price) for all 6 items was $334. Since the items were all on sale and then they applied the 30% off coupon, my total was $139. That's right - I saved almost $200 by spending $139!
As if that wasn't enough, I stopped in at a used furniture and furnishings store afterward (it was my day off), where I saw these 2 Ty Wilson framed posters (circa early 1990s) for $130 for the pair.

I liked the size and the simplicity of the pair, and thought they'd look terrific in the guest room we are going to redecorate in the Hollywood Regency style. I snapped these photo and texted them to Spouse. He agreed that $130 was too much. I offered to see if the vendor would negotiate on them, especially if they've been there awhile. The result was $80 for the pair, so I bought them!
It was a banner day for bargain hunting!

Underwear
I am a 'briefs' kind of guy.
I grew up wearing Fruit of the Loom or Hanes white cotton briefs, and always found them to be comfortable.
In the mid-80s I experimented with bikini briefs because that's what was in style then.
But I felt a constant urge to pull them up all the time, and the ones I got were some kind of blend of manmade fibers so they weren't as comfortable as cotton. So I went back to my traditional white cotton briefs.
Then in the mid-90s I experimented with boxers because that's what was in style then.
But that experiment was even shorter-lived. The loose legs got bunched up under the legs of my jeans/pants, and I really didn't like the lack of support. My loose junk jiggled around so much that I was constantly aware of it, and I do NOT need to be constantly thinking about my junk. So I returned to the comfort and support of briefs.
The next underwear fad to come along was the boxer brief. I didn't bother experimenting with boxer briefs because I assumed they would bunch up under my jeans/pants, and I would once again return to my old standby. Besides, nobody sees my underwear but me and Spouse so why I should I try something new? It would be different if I were single and wanted to 'impress' guys with my cute, in-style undies.
But recently I made a little shopping snafu at Marshalls. While intending to by these comfortable, supportive, cotton briefs:
I accidentally purchased these cotton boxer briefs:
Since stores do not accept underwear returns, I decided to go ahead and give the boxer briefs a try. I was pleasantly surprised to find they weren't half bad. They gave me sufficient support and the light elastic in the legs prevented them from bunching up. While I still prefer briefs, these boxer briefs are the next best thing.
So what about you? Briefs? Boxers? Or boxer briefs?

Mirror mirror, on the dresser
Spouse & I decided a few months back that we are going to redecorate one of our guest bedrooms in the Hollywood Regency style, so we began picking up pieces when we saw them at bargain prices. Spouse saw a clearance/close-out on a bedding set (comforter, bed skirt, shams, and decorator pillows) we purchased for $49.95 and I picked up a large sequined pillow for $12.99 and tossed them in a closet until we were ready to put the room together.
One of the key elements to making this transition to remove the large computer desk and replace it with a mirrored dresser to store some of the items from the computer desk. I saw the perfect piece at my favorite store, HomeGoods. It had 2 side-by-side drawers on the top and 2 full-width drawers below. But since I hadn't done any research on pricing yet I initially thought $279. for this piece seemed like a lot, so I didn't buy it. I came home and searched several online suppliers of similar pieces of mirrored furniture only to find that $279. was actually a very good price for the piece. Many similar pieces were 2 & 3 times as much. A few days later I went back to look at it again and, of course, it was gone. (That's the way it always is at this HomeGoods. If you like it, you have to buy it that day or it won't be there when you come back.)
A month or so later I saw another mirrored dresser that was very similar to the original one, but the drawer configuration was slightly different. It had 3 full-width drawers, but still it would work. It was in the clearance section because it had some slight damage (cracks) in the mirror. It was marked down from $279. to $149. The damage wasn't significant, and probably wouldn't be noticed by 50% of the people who would sleep in this room. But $149. still seemed like too much for a piece with damage.
Then a few days ago I saw that same piece had been reduced again, from $149. to $99. I was tempted to buy it right then and there but was afraid to do since Spouse had never actually seen the piece. I came home that evening, told him about it, and we agreed to go back the next day together.
As we walked toward the back of the store where the clearance items are, I noticed a woman and her husband picking up a nightstand from the non-clearance furniture area that matched the dresser. Spouse & I looked at the clearance dresser together, agreed the damage-to-discount ratio was very good, and decided to purchase the dresser for $99. I went back to the front of the store to get a cart onto which we'd load the dresser, while Spouse began talking with a store clerk who walked by.
When I came back to the clearance area with the cart, the couple who had gotten the non-clearance matching nightstand were telling the clerk that they want this piece (the damaged clearance dresser) too!
It was a bargain beat-out!!!
For a second I considered telling the couple the piece was mine, and showing them the cart I'd gotten from the front of the store as proof, and if they didn't relinquish the dresser, I would get all 'ignorant up in here'. But my better sense took over and we left the store, feeling defeated.
But the mirrored lining to the story is that the merchandise in this store changes over so incredibly fast that I know it won't be long before another mirrored dresser shows up for us. And this time I won't hesitate.

Score
I wasn't looking for a jacket. In fact, I don't normally even shop at the Timberland factory store, but Spouse was looking for a comfortable pair of shoes so we ducked in.
I saw this jacket which really looked striking to me. This photo is terrible, but I got frustrated with Spouse not listening to me about how to take the photo.
I liked the ivory color with the contrasting black detail. Most outerwear for men is black, navy, or some other dark color which I find depressing in the winter. I prefer lighter, brighter colors. Plus I already have a black nylon jacket and a navy wool jacket. This fabric looks kind of like leather from a distance but is actually more like neoprene.
I looked at the price tag on the cuff which read $128. This is a lot more than I would pay for a jacket. But then I saw the sign on the top of the rack which read "70% off". I used the calculator on my iPhone to determine this striking jacket would cost me less than $40. Score!!!
I pondered the situation for a minute ("Do I really need another jacket?") but decided that since I really, really liked it, it fit well, and I'd probably kick myself later if I didn't buy it, I went ahead and bought it.
I think its really cool!

I pondered the situation for a minute ("Do I really need another jacket?") but decided that since I really, really liked it, it fit well, and I'd probably kick myself later if I didn't buy it, I went ahead and bought it.
I think its really cool!

Annual visit
Our long-time friends Mike & Clark and Ron & James came to visit today!
Each year they come for a long weekend visit, not to take advantage of some annual sale or to attend some special event, but just to hang out with us, catch up on each others' lives, eat, drink, and laugh.
Today they arrived shortly after lunch and shopped at our local outlet/factor stores while Spouse & I worked. Then we all came together just after 5pm here at the house. We talked, enjoyed cocktails, and had some good laughs on the screened porch, and now we're heading out for dinner.
I was able to schedule myself off work this weekend (although I will slip out Sat morning to show 1 house) so we can spend some time together. Hello friends, and hello weekend!
