Back in DC

This past weekend Spouse & I were back in DC again.  I say 'again' because we were there a month ago for Easter, and 2 weeks ago for his mom's viewings and funeral.  But we went back again for 2 important reasons.

The 1st was a 35th high school reunion cocktail party.  This was not an official reunion planned by the class.  This was a cocktail party reunion held at our dear friends Kerry & Hugh's home.  Kerry sent out an Evite and I created a Facebook event to get the word out.  Probably 25 or so classmates came and everyone had a ball!

I had an idea of taking selfies with my classmates AND my cosmo, so you'll see several of those, plus some other photos.

The next day was Mother's Day, and only 1 month after Evelyn's passing.  This was another reason for coming back to DC; to spend Mother's Day with Spouse's sister Mary and her family.  We figured it would make the loss of our mother easier to endure on Mother's Day if we were together.  We had a very leisurely morning, talking and laughing a lot, and then ordered a bunch of Chinese food and ate lunch out on the deck.  Anna made this cake for her mother:  chocolate with mini M&Ms - her favorite.

We left at 3pm and after some traffic congestion finally arrived home at 6pm.

Patrick

Yesterday my old friend Patrick arrived!

We met when I was a junior and he was a senior in high school, and both of us were in the concert choir and Dominants! vocal jazz and show choir.  We became close friends during that year and one night he 'came out' to me.  At first I thought he was joking because he didn't fit any of the gay stereotypes with which I was familiar.  Later on I nervously came out to him, to which he responded "I know.  I knew you were gay before you did."  Patrick was instrumental in my physical and mental transformation which prepared me to to come out to my family and leave them and my former religion behind.  I could never repay him for this gift!

The weather was pleasant so Spouse, Patrick and I sat outside on the porch (with Marvin & Walter) and began getting caught up.
Patrick and me - friends for over 35 years!
When it got to be dinner time, Steven & Thad texted and invited us to dinner so we joined them and I introduced them to Patrick.  Before Patrick arrived I'd told Steven & Thad about him coming and described him as my "gay mentor" since he explained so much to me about being gay back in the day.  As a joke Thad said to Patrick "As I understand it, you are responsible for his gayness", pointing at me.  Not missing a beat Patrick replied "Yep, and I think I did a pretty good job too!"  We all laughed, of course.

Today I took Patrick to Crystal for breakfast, where he got to meet our friend and waitress Pau Pau.  Afterward we went for a 2-mile walk on the boardwalk, and then drove around the area a bit before heading home.  This evening while Spouse is at his personal trainer appointment, Patrick and I will go for Thai food and then go listen to my friend John play the keyboard and sing at a restaurant.  I think Patrick will enjoy that.

He'll be here through Wed morning.

Small world

Last night I went to sing karaoke at the Blue Moon, as I often due on Thurs nights.

The mistress of karaoke, Mona Lotts, introduced me to a guy named Scott who was visiting from Phoenix.  Just to kind of 'make conversation' with this visitor who didn't know anyone, I casually said that I went to high school with a guy who now lives in Phoenix and works as a bartender at a gay bar.  I knew this from his facebook posts.

Scott asked the name of the bar and I said it had the work "pump" in it.  Scott immediately said "Oh, the Pumphouse", to which I said "Yes, that's it."

Scott explained that the Pumphouse had closed down a little while back but said he knew many of the guys who worked there.  He asked my old high school friend's name so I told him.  Lo and behold, he said he was very good friends with my old high school friend!  Today I sent my friend a message through facebook and told him about meeting Scott the night before.

Small world...

Later that same night, a very nice 'mature' gentleman and his boyfriend/spouse/husband complimented me on my singing, so we got into a brief conversation.  I asked them where they were from and the 'mature' gentleman said they lived in DC, but that he was originally from Cumberland.  I asked if he meant Cumberland, MD and he said yes.
I told him that my grandparents lived in Cumberland their entire lives (they lived to be 77 and 81) and that I spent many a summer there.  My parents would spend a weekend with my grandparents and leave me there for a week or 2, then come spend another weekend with my grandparents and take me home.  It was great because I was raised in the suburbs but my grandparents lived in the country.  They had a huge vegetable garden and a creek in their back yard that my cousins and I would swim in.  I told him my grandfather sold insurance until he retired, and then worked part-time at an orchard.

The 'mature' man asked my last name and when I told him, he said "Oh, that sounds very familiar.  I'm sure our families know each other somewhere along the line."  What a funny coincidence to run into someone who knew Cumberland so well, visiting Rehoboth Beach!

It Gets Better

Unless you live under a rock (or in Cleveland), by now you've seen on blogs and Facebook the various celebrity "It Gets Better" videos. The idea came from Dan Savage in response to the recent GLBTQ teen suicides. But for me, there is one video that stands from all the rest.

Tim Gunn: It Gets Better

First off, wow!! This certainly affirmed the notion that you just never really know where people have been and what they've been through. I mean, to see someone as smart, strong and confident as Tim Gunn is now, and then to find out that he was taunted and bullied as a teen to the point of attempting suicide is startling.

For many teens the mental and physical abuse endured at school because they are gay or perceived to be gay becomes more than they can bear, resulting in suicide attempts. This angers me a great deal because I think we ALL believe that schools should be a safe place for kids to learn. And although some bullying and abuse is committed secretly, not all of it is. Some of it has occurred in front of teachers and other faculty who have not stepped in as they should. School personnel should institute a zero tolerance policy for bullying and then be held accountable for enforcing it.

And I do not want to hear "Kids will be kids..." How would you feel if it were YOUR kid who was being teased, taunted, bullied, beaten, or verbally abused? Would you still think it was acceptable teen behavior? I think not.

I was fortunate in the sense that, although my parents likely recognized I was 'not like most other boys' when I was growing up, they never forced me to participate in sports, fishing, or other activities in which I had no interest. I also received very little teasing and bullying at school, which was probably a combination of selective memory and the fact that I tried hard to hide my true self.

Coincidences?

Close to a year ago I was chatting on Facebook with an old high school friend Keri who was also a member of the jazz/show choir called 'Dominants' with me. Keri said she had run into our old director Debbie at the gym and got her email address. I got Debbie's email address but didn't write to her for nearly a year. I wanted to reconnect with her as an adult and tell her what a strong, positive influence she had on me. I wanted to tell her that I actually used everything I learned in her classes. I wanted her to know how highly all the former 'Dominants' speak of her on the Facebook page. I wanted her to know she made an important impact on my life, but wasn't sure where to start.

So just last Fri I was chatting with 2 other former members of 'Dominants' when 1 of them asked if I knew where Debbie was living, since she had retired. I shared with these 2 friends Debbie's email address, which made me stop for a few minutes and wonder why I hadn't emailed her yet. So I did.

The next day Debbie wrote back and said that she was "thrilled" to hear from me. After all the students she'd had in the 27 years since I graduated, I wasn't completely sure she'd remember me, but she did. She reminded me of "one of the highlights" of her career, which was the visit from Kirby Shaw, the distinguished vocal jazz composer/arranger/singer. She also said she certainly hoped I was using my "wonderful musical talents" in some way. (I always feel bad when someone from my musical past wants to know what I'm doing musically these days and I have to tell them 'nothing'.)

The next day on the beach I was introduced by a mutual friend to Bruce. It turns out that Bruce lives in the same town in VA where my high school is located. In fact, not only did both of us go to that same high school, we were there at the same time! He was a freshman the year I was a senior. As a joke I said "You might remember me, I was in 'Dominants'..." since 'Dominants' was the elite vocal jazz and show choir in the state. Being in 'Dominants' made you almost as cool as being on the varsity football team. Well, I guess I shouldn't have been surprised we he replied that he, too, was in 'Dominants' after I had graduated. Of course he asked if I knew anything about Debbie's whereabouts, so I told him about my recent email and her response.

While I'm at the beach talking to Bruce, a guy named Wes emailed me. (I read it later that evening.) He said he met Debbie at the gym and when she learned that he was looking for a singer for his gospel quartet, she highly recommended me. Of course she didn't know at the time that I lived in DE, so when I wrote back to Wes I explained that important detail.

So let's recap. Although I'd had Debbie's email address for about a year, I finally write to her on Fri. The next day she writes back. The next day I meet Bruce, another former student of hers, and later I get an offer to audition for a paid singing group due to a recommendation from Debbie.

Is it all just coincidence? I'm not sure. But if it isn't, what does it all mean?

Is the Universe trying to get me to find a creative musical outlet?

I really don't want to sing gospel music, even if I did live in VA. I really, really want to sing a capella vocal jazz but have no prospects for doing so at this time. But maybe if I 'put myself out there' the Universe will help me connect with people who have the same interest.

Which brings me to another coincidence, or not.

Sun on the beach Bryan & Jason and Vince invited me & Spouse to come out with them this Thurs night for karaoke, since it will be Vince's last opportunity before leaving the area. We agreed, so I will be singing karaoke this Thurs, which kind of goes along with the idea of 'putting myself out there' where I might find others who may want to sing jazz with me.

Coincidences? Hopefully time will tell.

Another reason to love Facebook

I've mentioned before how much fun its been for me to reconnect with old high school friends and friends from past jobs on Facebook. Seeing old photos from 'back in the day' has really given me some good laughs! There was 1 photo of me and others at a friend's house and I have absolutely no recollection of ever being there, and this was NOT due to alcohol consumption either! Its been a lot of fun to see what paths everyone has followed.

Recently I was contacted by a woman who graduated 2 years ahead of me named Lisa. She and I were both in Concert Choir, which is the only (hazy) memory I have of her. But she remembered me with much more detail, and sent me the following message on Facebook:

"Hi Mark, I'm sure you won't remember me, but I was in Choir with you at Gar-Field. You know how some people just make an impression on you? Well, I remember how talented you were and recall listening to you play the piano. I think you and I were just starting to become friends when I graduated in 1980. Every time I come across a picture of you in a yearbook or something I think "What a nice guy, I wonder what became of him?". So, when I came across a picture of you on Lisa XXXX's Facebook page, I thought I'd just send you a note and say "Hi". Still playing music I hope? Lisa"

I was absolutely floored that I had made such an impression on her. As you can imagine, this completely made my day! So I wrote back to her:

"Lisa, I'm not surprised - I'm SHOCKED - that you remember me! I was a mere sophomore when you were a senior! That goodness for Facebook and how easy it makes finding old HS friends. Thanks SO much for the kind words about my talent. After you graduated I was in Dominants and Concert Choir my Junior and Senior years, and after HS tried my hand at a number of choral, barbershop, and jazz ensembles. I'm not currently singing in any groups but I have fun at karaoke once in a while. Thanks for taking the time to send the message above. It made my day! Mark"

So I feel sorry for those who despise Facebook or think its a security risk, because they are missing out on some good stuff! (BTW, Facebook lets you set security levels for who sees your info, and you can enter or withhold as much info as you like.)

So with this in mind, I'd like to challenge those of you with Facebook accounts to find a high school friend and send them a nice message. Tell them that they are one of the people you remember from high school. Tell them you remember that they won the spelling bee, science fair, or talent show. Tell them you always thought they were cool. Reach out to someone you remember from school and make their day! Then blog about it.

Scanning: the results

I figured out how to crop my scanned photos and move them to 'My Pictures' on my computer. Then I uploaded a bunch of them to my Facebook page. I thought you guys might be interested in a couple of good laughs, so I'm sharing a few with you.

This photo was taken in Nov of 1981 when I was a senior in high school. Yes, that's right, over 27 years ago. Its "Vintage Mark"!!!
First, I invite you to check my version of the Farrah Fawcett hairdo for men! Yes, I had wings. Then I suggest you have a look at those giant glasses I'm wearing, that rival aeronautic goggles. Can you say "Stylin'"???

I scanned this photo which was taken in Feb of 2009. Its not funny or anything, I just scanned it because my friend Kerry sent it to me in the mail and I wanted a digital version since its one of the few photos of me that I like.
Spouse doesn't like it when we wear the same color, but it seems to happen a lot. I guess we get into the same 'color mood' at the same time.
Okay, now back to the hilarious. In this photo (I am in the bottom left) I am performing in a barbershop quartet in April 1981.
I changed costumes so fast that I didn't have time to button my cuff before going back on stage. You can see my cuff hanging open as I hold my hat out.

Here's another high school gem. I performed in a vocal jazz and show choir called "The Dominants", a play on words involving the dominant note in a chord. I'm on the right, behind the microphone.
Although its difficult to see, our costumes were made of red or blue satin. The glimmered and glistened when we moved! The girls had white satin pants and a red or blue satin tunic. The guys had white pants and shirts with red or blue satin tunics. It was very avant gard for its day!

Here we are at a competition where we won several trophies.
I am on the front row (of course), the 2nd red tunic from the right.

My high school friends have been loving all the scanned photos I uploaded, and we've been commenting about funny facial expressions and trying to remember the details of where we performed, etc. Its been really fun and has brought back some wonderful memories.

Scanning

I have really enjoyed seeing the photos posted on Facebook by my old high school friends. Since I performed in a vocal jazz and show choir group, I've been 'tagged' in lots of photo scans recently. This lead me to remember the photos I have from our group's performances, trips, competitions, and parties.

So I decided to get the photos out and scan them for posting on Facebook. But I hadn't really used the scanner function of my 4-in-1 unit, so I hoped it would be simple and intuitive.

Well, the scanning part was easy. Unfortunately, the raw scans look like someone took a photo of the photo on top of the scanner. The photo sits in the corner with a bunch of blank area around it, like this:

So, I've been experimenting with the photo editing software to try and enlarge the images and crop off all the blank white area. I think I've got that part figured out, but now I'm wondering how do I 'find' these edited photos? They're not in the "My Pictures" section of my computer, which would have been intuitive. I suppose once I find them I can move them to "My Pictures" where they belong.

If anyone has any handy scanning, editing, or moving tips for me that would be great!
