Fri evening after work Spouse & I met up with Steven & Thad at the beach. It was a gorgeous evening so we hung out at the beach until nearly sunset. Then we spent an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out where to go for dinner. It was late and I was starving. We finally ended up at a pizza joint where you can order pizza made with whole wheat dough, thin-crust style. I'm not sure if it really is, but it seems like a healthier way to eat pizza. Afterward the 4 of us sat on our screened porch and talked, enjoying the lovely weather. Normally Aug is synonymous with 90 degree temperatures and high humidity, but we are currently enjoying a lovely period of moderate temperatures and low humidity.
Sat morning I headed into the office, then met some new clients at 11:30. Showed them 4 very different places but all in the same price range. They're looking for a beach getaway and are from the same area where Spouse & I used to live. That evening Spouse & I met up with Kerry & Hugh, Hugh's parents, and Kerry & Hugh's friends Harriet & Bob for dinner. They came to town to see me perform in the Legends show! After a delicious dinner I went to the Blue Moon and they got a little dessert before heading over for the show. Steven & Thad, Joe P, and Jason & Kevin also showed up. I had my own cheering section in the audience! Joe P took the video below. Notice the enthusiastic "audience participation" as 1 guy shouts the months of the year. (Sorry the volume is low.)
The club was packed and the audience really seemed to enjoy the performances of Patti LaBelle, Donna Summer, and Neil Sedaka. I'm really going to miss this in a few weeks when the shows stop.
Sun was overcast and it even sprinkled/rained a few times. It was my turn to have phone duty at work so I went to work. It was VERY quiet and slow. Normally that's good for getting organized and doing my regular follow up, but I'd done that earlier in the week so it was rather boring in the office. So I decided it would be a good evening to get together with some of the guys after work for dinner. I rounded the guys up and we had dinner at Saketumi. More about that (including photos) in tomorrow's post. So even though I worked both days of the weekend, I still managed to inject some fun.
'Tales of the Sissy' is a play on words related to Armistead Maupin's novel 'Tales of the City' which chronicles the daily lives of several seemingly unrelated people. Since my blog chronicles my daily life and I am gay (hence the stereotype 'sissy'), I decided to call my blog 'Tales of the Sissy'.

Hot Coco
Last night I went to see the fabulous and fierce Miss Coco Peru perform at the Blue Moon!
This is my 4th time seeing her perform there. Last year Steven & I went, and this year Steven & Thad and Jason and I went together.
We started with dinner at Cafe Azafrain. We all enjoyed our food but we were slightly annoyed by a small but loud party nearby and the long wait for our food. Fortunately the food was really good. I had 2 tapas plates: baked goat cheese with olives and roasted peppers, and spinach gnocchi. Jason also had 2 tapas plates: fried calamari and seared scallops. Steven had the mozzarella and roasted pepper salad and pasta with wild mushrooms. Thad had the roasted vegetarian plate.
After dinner we walked up the block to the Blue Moon and waited a few minutes for the opening of the doors to the performance space. After securing seats together I went to the bar for drinks. (Cosmo for me, Malibu and diet for Jason, Ginger Ale for Steven.) At the bar I ran into our part-time neighbors from around the corner, Chris & Paul, and learned that they are living here full-time now! We shared our desire to get together soon and catch up. After returning to my seat with the drinks I saw Doug & Jim enter the performance space. There were 2 empty seats directly in front of us so they took them and we were able to chat a bit before the show started.
As beautiful and elegant as always, Miss Coco Peru entertained us with her hilarious stories, inspirational thoughts, campy musical numbers, and her unique perspective on life. Fresh, new material of course. We all roared with laughter over and over again and had a grand time!
In her closing, she announced that she would return to the stage for photo taking and selling of her DVD, something she had not done in her previous 3 visits to the Blue Moon. I was thrilled to hear this since I'd suggested Steven bring his camera, just in case.
Sure enough, after the show I got to talk to Coco!
I reminded her that we had chat via email and Facebook messages over the past few years. She asked for my email address and when I spoke it, she said "Oh yes of course." Then we posed for a photo:
I purchased one of her DVDs (a drag comedy special shown on LOGO) and she autographed it for me.

If you can't see her in person, by all means, watch her films, check out her YouTube clips, and join her Facebook fan page. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.
I must give props to my buddy Steven for his awesome photo abilities. He took the photo of Spouse & me in this post (which I cropped to become my current Facebook profile photo) and the 2 photos of me and Coco above. I usually don't like photos of myself but somehow he manages to catch me in the best light, which can't be easy. Thanks Steven!!

Weekend highlights
Fri night after dinner I decided to sing karaoke. Since different venues have different song books, I tried a new venue and found they had a lot of songs I liked. There wasn't a huge number of singers that night so I got to sing 3 times. I also met some nice, fun people there including a couple who got married in Key West 8 years ago. They've been there 27 times! I also met a man who invited me to join the Philly Pops! It was a fun night. But something very funny happened that I didn't discover until the next day.

After finishing my 1st song I returned to my bar stool and 1 of the bartenders (Gino) brought shots to me and a pretty blond woman (there with her boyfriend). Since I hadn't ordered it I was puzzled. I looked over at the blond woman across the bar who had also gotten the shot and she said to me "You did a great job on that song!", to which I said "Thank you". We both lifted our shots in the air to each other and downed them. I decided to go over and thank her in person, and we talked for a moment about what kind of shot we'd had (Pineapple upside down cake) and she asked if I was going to sing again. The next day I spoke to the other bartender, my friend Jason, and told him how flattered I was by the pretty blond woman who'd bought me a shot. Jason looked at me funny and asked "You mean the Pineapple upside down cake shot?" to which I said "Yes". Jason smiled and said "That was from me. She ordered the shot for herself and since I had extra, I gave one to you." So, when I got the shot and looked at her, it was a complete coincidence that she said "You did a great job on that song!" She didn't buy me the shot! Then I realized that when I went over to her and said thank you, I didn't say "Thank you for the shot", I just "Thank you" which she obviously thought I was thanking her for saying "You did a great job on that song!" Jason and I had a good laugh about that!!!
Sat morning Spouse had his personal trainer appointment and I had coffee and watched "Sell This House". After a quick bite to eat, we went took Big Ella to a car show in Georgetown and met up with our buddies Rick & Nick and Ken & Don. There were 101 cars registered and we enjoyed being there despite the humid weather. Afterward Spouse took a nap and I went to the beach at 2:30 and played several games of beach volleyball with Jason and the other volleyball guys.

I'm a little stiff today but it was a lot of fun! The water was very comfortable so we enjoyed several nice swim breaks between volleyball games. I stayed at the beach until 6:30. That night we went to Saketumi for our friend Chris' surprise 50th birthday dinner. The food was terrific as always (I had 2 sushi rolls) and we had a great time. Afterward I dropped Spouse off at home and then met up with some friends at Mandance, including our friend Doug from Doug & Jim. Since Jim wasn't feeling well he stayed home, leaving me and Doug to talk, laugh, gossip, and dance the night away. It was a lot of fun. I got compliments from several friends at the birthday dinner and at Mandance about my recent haircut.

I was concerned it was too short, but everyone confirmed the opposite.
Sun morning Spouse & I met Steven & Thad and The Bobs at the beach at 11:00. We were only there about an hour and 1/2 when it started pouring down raining! We got soaked before we could make it back to the car. Once back at home we showered and had a snack. Spouse took a nap and I watched a little TV. I was in the mood for a good, crunchy veggie-filled salad so I invited Steven & Thad and Bryan & Jason to join us at Ruby Tuesday. We had a nice time talking over dinner. Spouse & I stopped at the grocery store (my least favorite chore) on the way home. After putting away the food and feeding/walking the dog, Spouse & I settled in for a relaxing night of TV watching.

Tightrope
You may have noticed in my last two Weekend highlights posts that I mentioned meeting up with friends at Mandance, while Spouse stayed home.
Although we're alike in many ways, Spouse & I are also different in many ways. One of them is going to clubs/bars. He absolutely hates it, while I find it enjoyable at times if I know my friends are going to be there.
For the majority of our 14 years together (god, writing that made me feel really old all the sudden) we have not gone to clubs or bars. He doesn't drink alcohol and thinks its boring to 'stand around'. I drink and sometimes have fun hanging out and talking/laughing with friends, or better yet, dancing.
Every once in a blue moon he will acquiesce to meeting up with friends at a bar of club, especially if we're out of town. God bless him, he was a trouper when we were in NYC with David Dust and others and did our old school East Village gay bar crawl. He also went out when we were on vacation in Portland last Sept, and again with me and a bunch of friends on New Years Eve. But make no mistake: he would ALWAYS prefer to stay home and flip between the multiple home shopping channels.
Two Saturdays ago Mandance was having a Lady GaGa night and I made those GaGa-inspired glasses. Originally Spouse had said he would go with me (and meet up with a bunch of friends there) but then changed his mind. I was not about to let all my hard work on the GaGa glasses go to waste so I decided to go anyway, without him. He didn't mind at all. In fact, he encouraged me to go and have a good time, presumably so he could stay home and have a good time. So I did, and I had a ball! It was like I had somehow 'forgotten' that I loved to dance. I danced my @ss off and really enjoyed myself, without him.
This past Sat Bryan & Jason tried to convince us to go to Mandance. I needed no convincing but Spouse hemmed and hawed and finally gave them a 'maybe' answer. As I suspected, he wound up staying home again, but encouraged me to meet up with Bryan & Jason (and others we knew would be there) so I did. Again, I danced my @ss off and had a really good time, without him.
At first I felt a slight tinge of guilt for having such a good time without Spouse. Some couples regularly enjoy independent interests, and there is certainly nothing wrong with that. Our life as a couple has not been like that. We almost always agree to do something or go somewhere together, even if one of us has to coerce the other. But what has happened is some interests (like dancing) weren't experienced or enjoyed for years because the other person never wanted to. Until recently.
If only it was just as simple as agreeing to occasionally enjoy independent interests. Obviously a balance needs to be found. My fear is that if we do that too often, we may find it harder to compromise, and instead just tell the other person "I'll do my thing and you do yours tonight". I wouldn't want that to become the default. I want us to do the things we both enjoy, yet occasionally do together the things that only one of us enjoys. Compromising sometimes helps people see that something is not as bad or unpleasant as they think it is. But find that balance is like walking a tightrope.
Also, if I were to go out dancing most Sat nights without him it might cause people to question the stability of our relationship too. Although that may sound silly to those of you in big cities, such thoughts and comments are reality in small towns where everyone knows everyone.
So, we both seem to be okay with occasionally enjoying independent interests, but I'm wondering if any of you have any advice regarding how YOU successfully balance independent interests and couple things?

Weekend highlights
This weekend we received a wonderfully welcomed respite from the brutal heat and humidity of the passed week. Sat & Sun we had temps in the mid 80s and very low humidity. It was absolutely GORGEOUS here on the southern Delaware coast.
Sat morning Spouse went to his personal trainer appointment and I watched "Sell This House" as usual. But the last 1 in the back-to-back episodes was a repeat, so I turned off the TV, turned on some music and tidied up the kitchen and ran the dishwasher. Then I moved all the furniture to 1 side of the porch and swept, moved it all to the opposite side and swept, then arranged it all back to normal. Then I made tuna salad and filled our water bottles with ice and water, in preparation for going to the beach. When Spouse got home we slipped into our swim suits, grabbed out lunch and headed to the beach. As stated above, it was absolutely magnificent. On a scale of 1-10, it was an 11. We had a great time with Steven, Bob, Joe P, Alisha & Jack, Robin, Jason, and Kevin.
After showering, Spouse & I went to Radio Shack and Walmart, then met Bryan & Jason for dinner at Applebee's. They have dinners for under 550 calories AND they have the Weight Watchers point values on several of their healthier entrees, which is very helpful. We had a nice time dining with those guys, then returned home to feed and walk Jordan. We sat on the (clean) screened porch for a while since it was so delightful outside. Spouse settled in for the night with the remote and I headed out to meet up with our friends at Mandance. Had a lot of fun dancing and hanging with my buds.
Sun morning Spouse & I headed to VA to finalize the condo renovation project. We stopped at his mom's house and left Jordan, and took his mom and brother with us. The renovation turned out very well! I wish I had some "before" photos, but we forgot the camera last time. I took some "after" photos yesterday for the MLS listing and online advertising. The complex is designated as a historic community, built in 1947. Here's the courtyard, with mature oak, magnolia, and crepe myrtle trees.

Here's a seating area in front of our building's entrance.

After walking in the foyer, this is the living room. We had the nasty old carpet removed and put in cherry laminate wood floors, chair rail and crown molding, and painted. We love the original radiators - they add so much character!

This is the dining area, with doorways to the bedroom and bath on the left and to the kitchen on the right.

Here's the bathroom with its new vanity/sink/faucet, mirror and light fixture. The bathroom also received new flooring, new towel bars and fresh paint. We also replaced all of the electrical outlets and light switches throughout the entire condo. Details like that really add to the overall 'renovated' look and they improve the safety of the electrical system.

Walking into the bedroom and looking left, this is the view.
Standing in front of the windows in the bedroom and looking at the opposite side, here is the extra large closet. The nasty carpet was replaced by the same cherry flooring and was painted the same colors as the other rooms.
My favorite part of the renovation is the kitchen transformation. The kitchen used to have nasty linoleum flooring, gold countertops, and off white paint. Very bland and dated. Now it has cherry wood laminate flooring, granite-looking countertops, new stainless steel sink, new faucet, new garbage disposal, new glass mosaic back splash, new stainless hardware on the cabinets, and fresh paint. I love it!
We're very happy with the overall look and feel of the renovation. I'm hoping the careful but attractive investment in the renovation will help us get a renter quickly. After settling up with the contractor, we headed back to Spouse's mom's house where his sister was waiting for us. His niece came over too, and we all visited for a while. Then Spouse & I packed up Jordan and headed back home. We fed her and took her for a nice walk, then had dinner on the screened porch since it was so beautiful outside. We ended our weekend with a little relaxing TV watching.

Weekend highlights
Wow, what a weekend! Its started as weekends usually do for us with Spouse's work out and my coffee and episodes of "Sell This House". Then I unpacked all my bags of Dollar Store items and laid them out in themes in preparation to begin assembling the GaGa glasses. (Back story: Everyone knows Lady GaGa is known for her unusual, futuristic glasses. A local dance club was hosting a Lady GaGa night and I said to Steven & Thad and The Bobs that we should all wear GaGa-inspired glasses to the club that night. I went to the Dollar Store and bought 6 pairs of glasses and all kinds of stuff to adorn them. Thad loaned me his hot glue gun.) Once satisfied with the layouts, I began piecing and gluing them together. Spouse came home and decided it was too hot to go to the beach, but I still wanted to go. So he stayed home and watched TV and played around on the computer and I met up with Jason and Vince for lunch, then headed to the beach. It was really hot and the breeze was coming off the land so it wasn't cool or refreshing. Vince said he felt like he was in a convection oven! A little later Patrick and Chris showed up, an we divided our time between the shade of our beach umbrellas and the chilly but refreshing ocean. Finally the wind changed directions and came off the ocean which made it much more comfortable.
I got home about 5:30, had a shower, then worked on the GaGa-inspired glasses some more. Then I met Bryan & Jason, Vince, Patrick, Chris, Charles and Henry for dinner at Ruby Tuesday. Spouse decided to eat at home and continue his 'day of relaxation'. After dinner I returned home and put the finishing touches on the GaGa-inspired glasses and had Spouse take some photos. I don't know why I didn't smile in any of these photos - maybe because I was rushed. Since Lady GaGa wore those wild lobster claw shoes in her "Bad Romance" video, Steven suggested a lobster theme for 1 of the glasses, so this is what I came up with:
Since Sunday's forecast was to be a few degrees cooler, Spouse decided to join me and the guys at the beach. Again we brought beach umbrellas for shade, and plenty of water and snacks. The wind came off the water most of the time so it was really pleasant on the beach. Bryan & Jason, Vince, Patrick, and Chris joined us and we stayed from 11:45 until 4:30. A big wave knocked some guy into Bryan and both of them tumbled around in the surf. Unfortunately Bryan was wearing his prescription sunglasses and was unable to find them. He only meant to wade; otherwise he'd have taken the glasses off. We all had a great time anyway. As we were driving home the skies turned ominously grey, the temperature dropped at least 15 degrees, and the wind kicked up. I pulled a few huge weeds from the flower bed as Spouse took his shower, and then the storm arrived. Like most summer storms, it was wild and scary for a few minutes, then stopped. Spouse cooked dinner and I cleaned up afterwards. We ate and had a relaxing night watching TV.

Weekend highlights
Sat it rained off and on all day so the family wasn't able to go to the beach. We had breakfast together, then hung out until lunch time. Some watched TV, others on laptops and game systems. Spouse's sister picked up subs for lunch, then she and Spouse went to the grocery store while I loaded/ran the dishwasher and cleaned the kitchen. We invited folks over for dinner so there was lots to do to get ready. Spouse did most of the cooking and I helped with some of the prep as well as arranged the furniture and set the tables on the screened porch. That evening, Steven & Thad, their friend Allen, Thad's sister Robin, and Alisha & Jack came for dinner. Spouse's mother had made pasta and peas (a south Philly dish) for Thad a few months ago, so he was glad to get the opportunity to meet her. We had a tasty dinner of grilled boneless chicken and boneless pork chops, rice, roasted asparagus, salad, hummus, pita, olives, and marinated mushrooms. We had cake with fruit for dessert. It was a very nice evening.
Sun Spouse made scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, English muffins, and mixed fruit for breakfast and invited Rick & Nick. They were eager to meet Spouse's mother too. Again we ate on the newly expanded screened porch. It was about noon by the time we'd gotten the everything cleaned up and folks decided what they wanted to do. The family decided to go to the beach at 12:30 but Spouse & I stayed home because we had a 3:00 birthday party/cook-out at Bryan & Jason's. So we relaxed in the peace and quiet, caught up on email, and watched a little TV before going to the birthday/cook-out. Many of our friends were there and the food was really good so we really enjoyed the party. We returned home at about 6:30 and hung out with the family for a while. Then all of us went to boardwalk. The boys played some games at the arcade and several folks got ice cream cones from Kohr Brothers. We walked for a while and sat and people-watched for a while. Once back at home we watched TV together until midnight, which was fine since I took Mon off. So far having 6 extra people in the house hasn't been too bad, although the dishwasher seems to be running constantly.
This morning everyone slept in late. Since I'd taken the day off and the family had no real plans, I decided to go to the beach with my friend Tim. (The family could come later if they wanted.) Tim told me all about his recent trip to London, Paris, and Madrid with 22 students from the school where he teaches, and I got caught up on all his other adventures. I returned home at 3:30 to an empty house, took a shower and checked my email. Spouse and the family returned from the state park beach at 5:00 and we caught up on each other's days. Spouse left for his personal trainer appointment and I left for my volunteer activity at 5:30 so the family went to Five Guys for burgers and fries and then went shopping at the outlets. Some bargains were procured and modeled for us, then everyone agreed to go to bed early tonight since tomorrow they will take the ferry to Cape May and Wildwood NJ.

Weekend highlights
Sat morning Spouse went to his work out and I enjoyed my coffee and several back-to-back episodes of "Sell This House" before tidying up the kitchen and starting some laundry. Then we met Steven for lunch (Thad was out of town visiting his mother) and wound up talking for 2 1/2 hours! It was nice because neither he nor we were on a schedule. It was about 86 degrees so we decided to skip the beach. Instead Spouse & I went to Homo Depot to finalize our selections for the condo. We ran into Sean, a very nice (homo) guy who helped us with our tile selections when we were doing our bathroom. Sean helped us pick out the best items for the best prices and we made a list of the product numbers so we can email them to the contractor.Later I got a text from my old friend David who was enjoying blood orange margaritas at Dos Locos, so I picked up Jason (Spouse didn't want to go) and we joined David and a few friends for drinks. It was fun! Then Jason & I went back to Jason's house and Spouse came over so we could all go to dinner at Serendipity. Afterward Spouse went home but I went to the 'Mandance' with Bryan & Jason and Vince. Steven and The Bobs were there, as were lots of other friends. I danced and talked and had a good time.
Sun it was really hot so Spouse didn't want to go to the beach again. I almost didn't go, but Steven called me and said it was nice. Although it was in the 90s in town, there was a cool breeze coming off the ocean so it was comfortable on the beach. So I joined Steven, The Bobs, and a few other friends' camp on the beach.
Later Spouse & I had dinner at Pig+Fish for Dining Out for Life at the Beach. The restaurant's name comes from the expressions "Eat like a pig" and "Drink like a fish", which I support wholeheartedly. Spouse & I started with the hummus/red pepper/feta dip which was amazing. Then I had the tabasco smoked pork tenderloin over warm scallion bacon potato salad with sage honey glaze. OMG, it was delicious! Spouse had pan crispy chicken breasts with homestyle mashed potatoes and sherry pan jus which he liked. For dessert I had a warm peanut butter brownie with vanilla ice cream and caramel and chocolate drizzled over it. Spouse had the bourbon bread & butter pudding made from brioche with maple sugar and vanilla ice cream on top. Both were incredible! Since 20% of the bill was going to an AIDS charity we kinda 'went all out' on the appetizer, entrees and desserts, which was kinda fun. It was also nice to have a dinner out just the 2 of us. Weekend highlights
Our weekend started (as all weekends should) on Fri night with dinner out. We dined with 'the usual suspects' at Po Boys and everyone really liked their meals. We watched the Mecum Auto Auction until bedtime.
Sat morning was our long-anticipated neighborhood yard sale. My friend Thad (who gets up early anyway) came over at 7:30 and helped me transport my stuff to the site and set up.
Thanks Thad!! (Spouse went to his personal trainer appointment.) Although it was supposed to start at 8:00 we had buyers at 7:30 as we were unloading and setting up. I sold a youth size wooden desk for $50., a small formica top table with 2 wood chairs for $40., a queen comforter set for $20., and a ton of $1. $2. and $3. items like clocks, lamps, and baskets. My grand total was $143. which is not too bad considering it was just stuff taking up room in our house.

I got a pair of plaid 'patchwork' shorts, a bathing suit, 2 t-shirts, 2 polo shirts, and a pair of flip flops. Spouse got 2 t-shirts and 3 pairs of flip flops. (The flip flops were $1. a pair.) We drove over to the beach but decided it was a little cool to hang out there, so we headed home. Spouse took a nap and I enjoyed a cocktail on the screened porch and flipped through 2 magazines while listening to Ella Fitzgerald. Positively dreamy. Later I took my 1st bath in the jacuzzi tub. Its crazy that we've had it for 7 months and this was the 1st time, but it was nice and I felt luxurious. Then I took a quick shower, got dressed, and we met up with Steven & Thad and one of The Bobs for dinner at a seafood buffet. It was a gorgeous night so we went for a walk on boardwalk. We watched several episodes of "Sex and the City" since TBS was running a SatC marathon.
Sun morning we met Bryan & Jason and Dan for breakfast at Crystal restaurant, a local favorite for breakfast. Why does breakfast always taste better when someone else makes it? Then we went to Bryan & Jason's and watched "Avatar". I had no interest in seeing the film until everyone on earth said they liked it, even the people who (like me) had no interest in it. I must agree that I liked it as well. I thought the integration of real people and computer-generated stuff was pretty well done. After the movie Spouse & I went for a 2-mile walk on the boardwalk, where we discussed lots of stuff. It seems the times we talk and plan the most are riding in the car and walking on the boardwalk.
Once home again, Spouse took a nap and I watched a little TV. I was in the mood for buffalo chicken pizza so we had that for dinner at Miltonian Pizzeria & Wing House. Mmmmm... I unloaded the dishwasher while Spouse walked Jordan, and then we watched "Casino Royale" since it happened to be on TV and we had missed it in the theatre. It was pretty good.
