Weekend highlights

I realize how cliche this sounds but I couldn't be more sincere in wondering where the long weekend went? Its astounding to me that the 3-day Labor Day weekend is already gone.

Bugs & Roger arrived Fri night around 10:00. After showing them the new bathroom and closet/dressing room space, we had cocktails and started getting caught up on each other's lives. We had Blue PomeCosmos, one of my faves. Yummm...

Sat morning Bug & Roger and I had coffee, talked, and read on the screened porch while Spouse went for his workout. When he returned we headed out. We wanted to go to a couple shoe stores, but the holiday traffic was bumper-to-bumper, so we abandoned that mission and had lunch, then went to the liquor store. There was more talking, laughing, reading, and listening to music on the screened porch. We went for a walk to the beach, and then returned home for cocktails. Roger had a Sidecar martini while Bugs and I had green apple martinis.

Sat evening we went to Thad's birthday party. It was really fun! There was a nice mix of friends we already knew and others we met for the first time. Bugs & Roger seemed to enjoy themselves as well. Steven made all the food, which was tres yummy, and our friend Bob made the birthday cake. Thad made a special request for a 4-layer cake with alternating layers of carrot and spice cakes with cream cheese filling and icing. The cake was amazing! Note to self: get Bob to make my next birthday cake.

Sun morning we had coffee on the screened porch followed by a big breakfast of eggs, sausage, hash browns, and biscuits. We all felt the need for a walk after such a big breakfast, so we walked around the pond in the park, and then walked around town for a while. More reading, talking, laughing, and listening to music. We watched a DVD that Bugs & Rog brought with them, and then headed out to dinner at Meding & Sons Seafood. Unfortunately we were sat in a dining room where an extended family was having a birthday party for 'Pop-Pop'. The restaurant pipes music through the sound system, and there was a TV with Nascar playing in the corner, and the extended family included 4 small children who were playing with toys and crying. All of that added up to so much noise we had to ask each other to repeat things occasionally. Good thing the food was so delicious!

To calm our nerves from all that mayhem in the restaurant, we had dessert and cocktails on the screened porch when we got home. Spouse made a Lemon Dream pie (lemon curd folded into whipped heavy cream, spooned into a graham cracker crust and chilled) which was deliciously smooth and tart. Then we had chocolate martinis, followed by chocolate/espresso martinis, which went down oh-so-smoothly.

Mon morning after coffee and relaxing we went for another walk around town. The temperature was slightly cool, the humidity was low, and there was a nice breeze so we walked through town and along the canal. For lunch we had a cook out: burgers and dogs on the grill, potato salad, cole slaw, a fabulous tomato/nectarine salad Roger made without a recipe, baked beans and chips. We watched a movie, had the rest of the Lemon Dream pie, and hung out some more before deciding to go for a walk on the boardwalk. It was very breezy and water was rough, but it great walking weather. On the way back home we stopped for a bite to eat. Bugs & Roger loaded their things into their car and we bid them a safe and easy drive home. Spouse & I watched TV and then went to bed.

We don't have a long list of things we did this past weekend which might have made it go by quickly. Rather, it was more about quality time with good friends. Still, I can't help but wish the time had passed more slowly.

Carrot cake and spice cake together in the same cake? With cream cheese frosting... YUM! I'll have a piece with coffee, served on the screened porch, thank you. :)

Not only is Thad mentioned on the blog, there's now a picture of him here! How very exciting. Congratulations, Thad, on your birthday and being pictured on Mark's blog.

It is so nice spending leisurely time enjoying friends. Sounds like a perfect weekend.

What a great weekend for you guys! I need to come live with you, but I can't do that cuz it would piss off all the other guys I say that to. Maybe I'll get a bite of your pie someday. Lemon is my fave!
