Remembering Stonewall

Today is the 44th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, considered by many to be the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for gay and lesbian rights in the United States.

That chain of events should be remembered by GLBT people, for I believe the recent overturning of DOMA and Prop 8 wouldn't have happened, or wouldn't have happened for many more years without the Stonewall riots.

Today we remember and honor those who got things started.

Landmark day in GLBT history

I wished it would happen.  I hoped it would happen.  I considered how I'd react if it didn't happen, and what the next steps might be.  Fortunately that won't be necessary.

DOMA was overturned!

Prop 8 (for Californians) was overturned!

Today was a landmark day in GLBT history; no less important than June 28, 1969 when the Stonewall riots began.  Today's rulings are a real game-changer for many people.  Is it the answer to all GLBT people's problems?  No, but its certainly a huge step in the right direction.

I couldn't let this day go by without celebrating so I rallied the troups (Steven & Thad, Joe P, the Bobs) and we drinks and dinner at a gay-owned restaurant.

Congratulations!!

Another step

On Wed the Delaware legislature took another positive step toward equality for all Delawareans by passing SB 97, adding protections for gender identity to Delaware’s nondiscrimination and hate crimes laws. Governor Jack Markell swiftly signed the legislation into law. With this historic move, Delaware joins 16 other states in providing basic fairness for our transgender citizens.

Latest Legends photos

Last Sat Steven & Thad and Spouse and Joe P came to see me in the Legends show.  I performed as Elton John, and Joe P took these great photos!

Sweet-n-Sour Richfield

Last night I went to see Miss Richfield 1981 in her latest show "Made in China" at the Blue Moon.

I met Steven & Thad and Joe P for dinner 1st at the Purple Parrot.  (Spouse opted to stay home and peruse the home shopping channels instead.)  It was burger night so of course we had to get the huge 1 lb burgers, which were a tasty splurge.  Then we headed over to the Blue Moon for the show.

I've seen Miss Richfield 1981 several times and feel she is 1 of the funniest entertainers I've ever seen.  This new show "Made in China" was no exception.  The concept of the show was that, since winning her title as Miss Richfield in 1981, she's been traveling the country sharing the joys of Richfield, MN.  The people of Richfield support her efforts to such a degree that each time she returns home, there is another (1-way) bus ticket on her trailer door, courtesy of the townsfolk.  Since everything is made in China these days (iPhones, clothing, etc.) Miss Richfield has decided to take her show on the road... to China.

In her usual politically incorrect and stereotype-exaggerating way, she had us doubled over with laughter until tear streamed down our faces.  Only don't laugh for too long or you'll miss the next funny thing she'll say.

We had a terrific time, and after the show Miss Richfield came out into the audience to pose for pictures!  Here are Joe P, Miss Richfield 1981, and me:
Here's Miss Richfield and Steven:

Be sure to check out her show when she comes to your town.  If she doesn't come to your town, then MOVE, or at least make a point to see her where ever you can.  Check her appearance dates here.

More equality

As if getting same sex marriage in DE earlier this year wasn't enough, there is now an effort to pass a gender identity nondiscrimination act too.  Even more equality!!

It is looking very good that this legislation will pass, and our fabulous Governor Jack Markell has always been committed to equality for all Delawareans.  Very exciting!

Some of these have 'been around' before, but they still make chuckle.  I hope you enjoy them as well.

Work

Work has been really busy.

This is not a surprise, since I live and work in a summer resort area and its summertime.  There are lots more people interested in real estate at this time of year.

Being busy is a good thing.  I am paid strictly by commission, so I don't make money if I don't sell houses regularly.  So I'm not complaining about being busy!

I like my job most of the time but it can be frustrating when work gets in the way of my days off.  Sometimes I have a 'to do' list, sometimes I want to go to the beach and relax, sometimes I just want a day off.

But for now, I will probably not be able to keep up with my blog in a timely fashion nor will I be able to keep up with the blogs I like to read.  But I remind myself that once the summer is over I will not be as busy and I will have days off.

Stoopid lyrics

Here is another installment of my blog feature "Stoopid lyrics" where I share with you a well-known song with lyrics that don't make sense.

Keep in mind this doesn't mean the song is stoopid or that I don't like the song. In fact, most of the time I like the songs and only discover they contain stoopid lyrics when I try to sing along.  But in all cases, the lyrics make absolutely no sense.

You be the judge!

performed by Five for Fighting

I can't stand to fly
I'm not that naive
I'm just out to find
The better part of me

I'm more than a bird
I'm more than a plane
More than some pretty face beside a train
It's not easy to be me

Wish that I could cry
Fall upon my knees
Find a way to lie
About a home I'll never see

It may sound absurd but don't be naive
Even Heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed but won't you concede
Even Heroes have the right to dream
It's not easy to be me

Up, up and away, away from me
It's all right
You can all sleep sound tonight
I'm not crazy, or anything

I can't stand to fly
I'm not that naive
Men weren't meant to ride
With clouds between their knees

I'm only a man in a silly red sheet
Digging for kryptonite on this one way street
Only a man in a funny red sheet
Looking for special things inside of me

It's not easy to be me.

Weekend highlights

On Sat I worked all day, and wound up staying late at the office writing an offer for the clients I met that day.  I love it when people are decisive and prepared!  I raced home, changed clothes, picked up Spouse, and headed out to dinner.  We'd made plans with Vic & Mike so I texted them to say we were running late.  We had dinner at Hobos, and eventhough it was rather warm, we ate outside.  We had a great dinner and enjoyed the time with our friends.  Afterward I walked down the street to get ready for my 1st performance of the 2013 season of the Legends show!  I was Elton John, and the audience really seemed to enjoy the show.  After the show when the Legends mingled amongst the  audience, I was approached by this cute young male couple from Atlanta.  They were in town with 1 of the guy's sister and her husband for an engagement party.  They were all so sweet and asked if I would pose with them for a photo, so of course I said yes.  It was a great night!

Sun morning we had breakfast at the Crystal with Steven & Thad, then decided to stop at the Merrell show store on the way home.  Spouse wanted some new flip flops that gave him better support.  "Flip flops that give you support??  They're called shoes" I told him, rather proud of myself for thinking of something so witty on such short notice.  While he tried on supportive flip flops, I spied a deep discount on some very bright shoes.
The price on the box read $110. but the sign on the display read $40.  These happen to be factory seconds, meaning they are not 1st quality.  The sales lady said some were known to 'crack' on the top of the shoe just below the laces.  But I loved the orange, yellow, and green with black trim color combo, and the fact that they were so light-weight, and the fact that they are ventilated, and the fact that they were so comfortable, that I bought them anyway.  Its not like I will wear these shoes every day (or every week for that matter) so I was okay with them being factory seconds.  Being the copycat that he is, Spouse had to get a pair too.

What do you think?  Do you just love them???

Once back at home, we got ourselves ready for an afternoon at the beach.  It was pretty hot and the breeze was coming off the land rather than the water, which blows pesky biting flies onto the beach, so it wasn't the best day for the beach.  But we enjoyed it anyway, just hanging out with Steven & Thad and seeing several of our other friends there too.  Later than evening we met up with them again for dinner at Tuscan Grill.
